Avurudu - Sri Lanka New Year

Sri Lanka is fortunate enough to celebrate the New Year twice!

The first day of every year and then the 'Avurudu' in April, which is the traditional Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. Round about this time, you will hear the call of the 'Koha' bird or the 'Koel' whose singing peaks in mid-April when the New Year is about to start. If you are in Sri Lanka during this period, many hotels in the country will treat you to the traditional rituals, the games and of course the delicious food that is associated with Avurudu! Although there are two declared holidays, Sri Lanka is usually on vacation for most of the week!
