Kalpitiya - the new kitesurfing haven

Feel The Adrenalin Rush...Calling all water enthusiasts and nature lovers!

If you want a rush of adrenalin over the weekend or simply explore the pristine waters of a marine sanctuary housing dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and dugongs, head over to Kalpitiya in the district of Puttalam. A beautiful peninsula comprising fourteen islands, this is the new place to explore in Sri Lanka. What started off as a naval garrison during the Dutch colonization of Sri Lanka in the 17th century, is now an exhilarating kite surfing destination, and attracts many water enthusiasts, and nature lovers throughout the year. The locals who are mainly fisherman are quite friendly and will show you around the sixteen square kilometers of this sand haven.

So where does one start? I would recommend Kitesurfing Lanka, the first of its’ kind, and the largest kitesurfing school rated ‘excellent’ by Trip Advisor. A well-equipped place with a range of gear, young, friendly and well experienced IKO certified instructors will start you off on a ride of a lifetime that will keep bringing you back for more and more whether you want to learn or practice. That’s for certain!

Kiting season is from May to October and from December to March. During the first season, the winds are constant at 18 to 20 knots an hour (in surfer terms) 24 hours a day,7 days a week which is simply 17 to 23 miles per hour. The peninsula which separates the majestic Indian Ocean from the Kalpitiya lagoon allows the free riders and the beginners to experience the thrill over water at the same time. If you travel during the second season, you will experience lesser winds and only in the afternoon although there is much to be done in the mornings. One can take advantage of the marine sanctuary by snorkeling or diving, paddle boarding kayaking or even snorkeling. So there’s more to do than just kiting!

Accomodation ranges from the private chalets to tents with access to great food. A fishing village, one can indulge in a variety of sea food, crab and prawn included in an early morning catch! Kitesurfing in Kalpitiya is an experience not to be missed. So when you’re looking for a bit of exhilaration, go to Kalpitiya and catch a wave!
