Itinerary

Day 01 : Warm Welcome

Your flight lands at Bandaranaike International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon your arrival. You make your way to the gorgeous grounds of your hotel, No visit to Sri Lanka is complete without staying at a hotel Built back in the 19th Century by a wealthy barrister by the name of Sheikh Salehboy Moosajee, this Victorian townhouse once welcomed governors, maharajas, nobility, and the cream of Ceylon’s colonial society.You easily settle into the comforts of your luxury accommodation.

Check – in formalities will be done before you arrive at the hotel.

Dinner option and higly recommended : ministry of crabs ( best ceylon crabs in town ) and Culinary ceylon 7 course curated dinner with history of each dish.

Day 02 : The legacy of Mr Bawa

Have an scumrptious breakfast before meeting your guide in the lobby for a private tour of Sri Lanka’s commercial capital of Colombo, where you can witness many historical monuments such as the independence square, old parliament, Old Dutch hospital, Town Hall and a walk through the Galle Face Green.

 

But before we will first visit 3 important creations by Geoffrey Bawa that rests in Colombo.

 

Number 11 Colombo Residence which was Bawa’s personal residence in Colombo, now converted as a Museum which combines his usual love for traditional local forms with the start white architectural palate he favored.

 

Seema Malaka  a Buddhist Temple in Colombo which was initially built in the 19th century which was sunk in to the water and thereafter later redesigned and constructed by Mr. Bawa.

 

Today in time for dinner we will make a visit to Gallery Café – This is the former office Geoffrey which was personaly created by himself and was one of his favorite properties. This is now converted in to a gallery and a restaurant with a personal approval of Bawa and is now one of the most beautiful and awe striking restaurants in the city of Colombo.

 

Enjoy you dinner at the restaurant as this is one of our personal favorites.

Day 03 : Roots of the legacy

After breakfast, we begin our journey to Sigiriya.

 

En-route you visit Millennium Elephant Foundation a family run non-government organization (NGO) which is dedicated to improving the welfare of domestic elephants throughout Sri Lanka.

 

Home of the new and exclusive Elephant Walk Experience. The alternative to elephant riding option for tourists. An ethical, up close and personal experience unique to MEF. The most interactive enjoyable way to see domestic elephants in Sri Lanka.

 

Thereafter transfer to your hotel stay and check in at Heritance Kandalama, a hotel designed by the maestro in the 90’s which is also considered to be a very important works of Bawa as it clearly showcases his talent for creating affective spatial sequences and architectural narrative.

Day 04 : Exploring history

After early breakfast  proceed to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a masterpiece built by King Kashyapa in the 5th Century AD which was also declared a World heritage site as it displayed the cumulative effect of science of town planning, arts, architecture, landscape architecture and the science of water management practices in Sri Lanka in the 5th century AD.

 

(Optional Hot air balloon flight makes for an unforgettable and breathtaking journey. toasted with a glass of champagne. spectacular sunrise across the Kandalama tank as it paints the landscape with wonderful colours, watch the fisherman beneath, the mountains, the green forests with the waking of wildlife “music of the wild”).

 

Thereafter proceed to the Kandy.

 

En-route make a stop in Matale where you will be given an educational tour of a Spice Garden to learn of the various spices and herbs in Sri Lanka.

 

Once you arrive in Kandy; make a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, a Buddhist temple located in the Royal Palace complex which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. It ancient times it was believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.

 

Late evening proceed to a cultural Centre to witness a Traditional dance performance where you can see all the Sri Lankan dance types in one platform.

Day 05 : Beyond creations

With a great start we make our way to the beach.

 

En-route you can make a stop at a Tea Factory in Giragama where you will be able to witness the tea making process in Sri Lanka. An experience not to be missed as Sri Lanka do make the world’s best tea.

 

Arrive in Bentota for a two acres of land and housed in the ‘Mohotti Walauwa’, Sri Lanka’s first boutique hotel converted in the 1970s by world-renowned architect, Geoffrey Bawa.

Day 06 :The artistic sculptures

Today after breakfast we will drive to Galle to visit the historical Galle Fort. Once built by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th Century. An Archeological and an Architectural monument which even after over 400 years maintains a polished appearance due to extensive reconstruction work done by the archeological department of Sri Lanka. This will be a walk to remember!

 

Then we will visit the Jetwing Lighthouse, one of the last major projects done by the Maestro that perches on a scenic rocky promontory just west of Galle. Bawa designed the hotels granite walled entrance to mirror the 17th century Dutch Fort while it commands superb views of the ocean from its rock-top perch and comprises a series of interlinked open spaces that makes the most of this unique landscape.


Thereafter we will proceed to Matara to visit the University of Ruhuna, a new building complex for the university was designed under the guidance of Geoffrey.

Day 07: The legacy unfolds

Breakfast at Hotel.

 

Today’s we visit two iconic gardens with highly architectural value that was designed by the Bawa’s – the places where it all began.

 

Our first visit will be to the Lunuganga Estate which was the country home of the late Geoffrey Bawa. This country home was one of his first projects he undertook for his passion in architecture which also led him to realize his lack of knowledge which made him go to England to study and master the subject. On his return the Lunuganga Estate became an experimental laboratory for him, where he worked on it for 40 year until his death in 2003.

 

Thereafter we will be visiting the “Brief Garden” – the legendary garden and the country home of Bevis Bawa who is the one and only brother of Geoffrey. It was this garden that inspired Geoffrey to take up architecture and is not a must see for those interested in landscape design.

 

The house specializes in serving Sri Lankan Food served to various recipes and preparation that were part of the life during the life of Bawa. Therefore to have that special, authentic experience your lunch will be served today at the Brief Garden. 

 

On completion you will transfer back to the hotel, en-route making a last visit to the Bentota railway station which was designed by Geoffrey.

Day 08 : Collection of memories

Breakfast at Hotel.

 

Proceed to the airport in time for the departure flight.
